Destiny and the Karmic Axis

Moon's Nodes through the signs

The North and South Node form a karmic axis which represents our destiny or spiritual quest in life and our past lives. This karmic axis is linked with our soul purpose.

Karmic Axis and Nodes of the Moon

The North Node points to a key lesson in our lives. It represents new experiences towards which we must aim during this life. We have already learnt the skills of its opposite point, the South Node, in the past. Now we must grow and stretch ourselves through the North Node.

The Lunar nodes aren’t planets, but points in space that connects the orbits of the Sun the Moon and the earth. When these are aligned eclipses occur, which happen twice a year.

The nodes stay in one sign of the Zodiac for approx a year and a half. So the people born in that time span are our Soul group. In approx 18 years the cycle repeats, so people born 18 years apart from us share the same lunar node sign, and are also aligned to our Soul group.

Those born 9 years apart are our opposites, and we’ll have a strong attraction to them. Also those people whose Sun sign is the same sign as our north node can help us by modeling the qualities we need to develop.

In the Western system of astrology the North node is connected to our destiny, the South node to our past lives. The sign and the house of the North node show where we will be stretched, where our soul wants us to grow.

It’s worth bearing in mind the saying that the Soul doesn’t necessarily want us to have a nice day!

Karmic Axis and our Soul Purpose

A sense of purpose can help us overcome the toughest difficulties in our lives, by taking the focus away from our failings and problems,
and shining the light on our strengths and talents.

By concentrating on our purpose we can distract ourselves from our troubles, and maintain the forward momentum of our lives. A sense of purpose can also lead to feelings of happiness and joy.

He who binds to himself a joy
Doth the winged life destroy
But he who kisses the joy as it flies
Lives in Eternity’s sunrise
William Blake

Ancient astrologers believed that a person could either identify with their human body and human life, or could focus on a spiritual life. A rewarding spiritual life can help ease human pain and suffering, and inject joy into the everyday life.

A sense of purpose can assist the process of transferring our identification from our human selves to the spiritual sides of our nature, and one of the greatest gifts of astrology is to help us determine our purpose.

Elements

The element that the north node is in gives us clues. Often it’s in an element that is a challenge for us. Do you have Saturn (the block) in that element? Is that your weakest element?

Fire equals passion and romance with a lot of initiative. How much passion do you have in your life? Do you have any other planets in fire or is that your weakest element?

Earth is practical, it manifests. How ordered is your life? How are your finances? How well do you take care of your home, your garden, your possessions, your body?

Air is communication, it networks. How well do you keep contact with others? Can you express what you want and need to those that matter to you?

Water is emotion, it feels. Do you feel overwhelmed by feelings, or can’t bear to see others cry? Do you ever act hysterically?

Balance

The nodes are opposite signs and both have a planet that rules them. It’s important to factor in how well those planets are doing and what relationship they have.

For instance, the north node in Aries is ruled by Mars. If Mars is weak (eg. in Cancer) then it’s difficult for the person to get their needs met, they will subordinate their desires for that of their family. On the plus side, they could well go into the role of mothering others as a therapist for instance. However the Aries node is meant to challenge them into unknown areas in their life and not be held back by others.
