The most important transit of the year (and a taste of things to come in 2009) occurs on November 4th - which just happens to be the day of the US elections.

This is the opposition of Uranus to Saturn in the signs of Pisces and Virgo. It only happens every 45 years so is comparatively rare. A respected American astrologer Bob Mulligan writes:-

"As we enter October, everyone understands that the world is in a time of fundamental realignment. Economic and political changes are here, and there are more to come. A new world is being born from the chaos of the past. This is a time when victory comes by focusing on the future and by being directly involved in the creation of something new." Bob Mulligan

Uranus is the God of Change, Saturn the God of Security. Uranus is the revolutionary, the rebel, the new. Saturn stands for the conservative, the status quo, the old.

This opposition is exemplified by the two presidential candidates- John McCain and Barack Obama -though they have reversed roles with their choice of running mates.

Uranus is the most eccentric planet and it always signifies a change in the collective. Uranus can act impulsively as it wants change for changes sake. It likes risks and wants freedom.

Saturn can resist change as it keeps us in fear of the future. It is slow and lethargic but without it we would have no structure in our lives - no foundation on which to build.

THE BODY
The negative result of these two energies in the body would be the dramatic swing between elation and depression. It is vital to recognise if you have the tendency to do this and to balance the two. Uranus would show up as the need to have some excitement or thrill -the urge to escape. Saturn can be lazy and lethargy, it's the desire to bury oneself under the duvet.

TAROT
In the tarot Uranus is The Fool and Saturn is The World card (pictured). The Fool begins the soul's journey, the World completes it. However its vital to distinguish between the Wise Fool or the naive child. I love the image that Kay Stopforth has used for her Quantum Tarot deck.

She writes:

"The World card represents this paradox of being a limited being in an unlimited universe. The dancer at the centre of the card symbolises the freedom to be found in accepting our limitations. The World encapsulates all the wisdom of the Major Arcana, and brings us full circle to the carefree innocence of the Fool. But this is an innocence founded on experience, growth and acceptance. It indicates the maturity of our soul, a coming to terms with who, what and where we are. We live in the world, not apart from it, yet our understanding stretches far beyond its boundaries."

To embrace the exciting creativity that is on offer it is vital to listen to Saturn's need for structure and professionalism. We need to integrate both these energies- to balance the needs of security and safety with our soul's needs to break free of constraints and individuate.
