The Key Phrase for Capricorn Sun sign is “I achieve”. It governs the number 10

Capricorn 22 December -20 January

Capricorn is the architect of the zodiac. Capricorn corresponds to the knees and arthritis can be a problem in later years. The knees represent humility- we get down on our knees to pray to God, and this sign can suffer from too much self effacement and not enough self confidence.

Capricorn is the sign that marks the Winter Solstice and the longest night of the year. This is the turning point when the Sun changes direction and the days start to get longer in the Northern hemisphere. This ancient festival has been celebrated for over 5,000 years. The New Year is in the sign of Capricorn and Old Father Time is an apt symbol. Capricorns get better with age when they have had experience of life.

Capricorns are the backbone of society and value anything that is old and traditional. Like the mountain goat they slowly build upward in their lives and their goal is to reach the top. The goat was originally a sea goat and Capricorn is a deeply spiritual sign.

Capricorn represents the height of achievement and the recognition that comes from years of work.

Planetary Ruler and Qualities
Capricorn is a cardinal earth sign. As the last earth sign it is the master builder and governs mountains and buildings, especially those that are old. It’s governed by Saturn, the planet that is the last to be seen with the naked eye. Saturn is the ringed planet and is concerned with limitations and boundaries. Planets represent energy and Saturn conserves, restricts and governs time.

In the Greek myths Saturn was called Cronus who was one of the children of the original creator god Ouranus. Cronus killed his father with his mother’s help and the Golden Age of Time began. Capricorn is the Father Archetype, yet often the actual father is a remote figure for a Capricorn.

Relationships
Capricorn is polite and well mannered, and will always do the right thing. All earth signs are sensual as they enjoy their bodies. The male is dressed in a suit and quite formal and knows how to make a relationship work. The female is always more sensual than she appears and she likes to be the boss. Marriage is a contract that is taken seriously by them. When they commit, its for the long haul. When young, a Capricorn will be attracted to someone older. They relate well to Cancerians as this is a traditional father/mother partnership. The most attractive signs for marriage are Taureans and Scorpios, and Aries make better partners than you might think. Virgos are great friends and excellent business partners and, for Capricorns in the media, a Pisces is an imaginative ally.

Myth
Capricornus is the constellation of The Sea Goat, a goat with the tail of a fish.  This might relate to the story of Pan who, when fleeing from the sea monster Typhon, jumped into the Nile. The part that was underwater turned into a fish, while his top half remained that of a goat.

Strengths and weaknesses
Capricorn is concerned with self mastery. They are devoted to duty and fulfil their responsibilities. They provide security, a well organised home or business with firm foundations. They work extremely hard and can be workaholic. This makes for a serious and overtly materialistic life with not much time for fun which can be seen as a waste of time. They preserve the status quo and can be very resistant to change or innovation as they are loathe to take risks. Capricorns are careful, especially with money, so they can be stingy. They can be pompous and judgemental- the grumpy old man or woman.
