How much are you beating yourself up?

“All people have self-destructive areas inside themselves that can be healed. Frequently, our ego attacks us just after we make mistakes, or just before we are about to have our biggest breakthrough. It saves its most vicious attack for when we seem to be about to break away from the ego and have a realisation of ourself as loved and loving." Chuck Spezzano

How well are you doing? Have you been beating yourself up about how much you haven't done enough this week?

Have you been judging your 'performance' after you just did something that propelled you into the spotlight?

Is someone you love attacking themself? Does that in turn make you think that you're a failure as a friend, lover, mother/father, teacher, therapist?

If so then you are caught in a place of self attack.

This classic scene from Fawlty Towers when John Cleese beats his car with a stick is very funny but its what most of us are doing to ourselves most of the time! In metaphysical terms our car represents our body -which is interesting as any accident we have to our car will reflect on a part of our body that we are attacking. And accidents tend to happen when we are just about to step forward in our lives into a place of leadership.

Self attack is one of the reasons that bad things happen to good people.

The EGO loves us to attack ourselves because while we are doing it we can't look at what else is going on in our world. Its important to know that self attack comes after we have stepped into a place of leadership. It comes from the self hatred that we bury deep inside ourselves. Each time in our lives when we feel we have failed, screwed up or behaved badly we bury those feelings. However this is not the truth of who we really are.

In archery terms the word 'sin' means to miss the mark, i.e. its no big a deal. Instead of recognising our mistake and making a simple correction, we create a monument to it and convince ourselves of our inadequacy. So we continue to beat ourselves up for not being perfect!

THE WAYS THROUGH
It's time to let yourself off the hook. To stop this lunacy of self torture. It creates a wall between you and others. Make today the day when the wall comes down so that the people who love you can get close to you again.

1. Step into Leadership: Answer the call for help
Self attack means you are unavailable to others and it blocks your purpose. If you keep attacking yourself, those around you will continue to suffer. For the sake of everyone you love, including your children and all children, today choose to lay down the knife with which you have been symbolically attacking yourself. Once you lay the knife down, you will also be able to help anyone else to do the same thing. Next ask the question: Who needs my help? Then write, call or send them loving energy. Each time we join with another a layer of our ego melts away.

2. Put the problem into the hands of your Higher Mind
An easy way to let go of self attack is to ask for help from your Higher Mind. This is the creative part of you that has all the answers. We have two minds - the Higher Mind with its quiet voice, and the ego with its cacophony of loud voices. Today put your future into the hands of your Higher Mind.

3. Recognise that you are gifted
All problems can be solved when we realise that we have gifts to give that would heal the situation. These are soul level gifts or talents that are just about to emerge such as Creativity, Effectiveness, Humour. The bigger the problem, the bigger the self attack, the bigger the gift.

4. Know that you are a Child of God
Make today the day you remember who you really are. The guilt, the low self esteem, the feelings of inadequacy, come from the EGO. Note its acronym is 'Edging God Out'. Instead know this:-

"The truth in you remains as radiant as a star, as pure as light, as innocent as love itself." From ' A Course in Miracles'. T662

with warmest wishes,

DEFINITION OF EGO: The part of us that seeks separation and specialness and - ultimately - wants to be God. It is the part of us that fights for itself and its own needs first. It is built on fear, guilt, negativity, and competition, wanting to be the best of something, even if it is painful, or the best of the worst. Ego distracts, delays, and attempts to stop evolution, being more concerned with its own continuity. It is based on domination-subjugation, rather than any form of strength or truth. It is ultimately an illusion. We make it strong, while we are young, and then melt it away for partnership and grace.
