Jupiter: King of the Gods

Thetis pleading with Zeus

Taking Command of Your Life

Jupiter, the biggest planet in our solar system represents the positive qualities of faith, optimism and abundance. Zeus is King of the Gods who ruled the sky and heaven.

There is the strong connection to vision, looking upward and to the future. Jupiter often urges us to be free. As King of the Gods its the place in our charts can be where we take command in our lives.

 Issues

Jupiter is larger than life and excess can lead to weight gain, lack of discipline, pomposity and believing we’re right. Sagittarians are often the preachers and missionaries of the zodiac, but can have a habit of never stopping talking!

Henry VIII was such a character and his reformation of the church, his many wives and his burning desire for an heir to succeed him so he would create a dynasty are all representative of Zeus.

The Myth

Zeus was one of the sons of Cronus (Saturn). Cronus swallowed all his children as soon as they were born, Cronus had overthrown his father Uranus and the oracle foretold he in turn would be killed by his son.

Rhea – his mother – gave birth to Zeus in Crete, handing Cronus a rock wrapped in swaddling clothes, which he promptly swallowed.

After reaching manhood, Zeus forced Cronus to disgorge first the stone then his siblings in reverse order of swallowing. Together, Zeus and his brothers and sisters overthrew Cronus and the other Titans. The defeated Titans were then cast into a shadowy underworld region known as Tartarus. Atlas, one of the titans that fought against Zeus, was punished by having to hold up the sky.

After the battle with the Titans, Zeus shared the world with his elder brothers, Poseidon (Neptune) and Hades (Pluto), by drawing lots: Zeus got the sky and air, Poseidon the waters, and Hades the world of the dead (the underworld).

Zeus was both the brother and consort of Hera. By Hera, Zeus sired Ares, Hebe and Hephaestus. He was famous for his many conquests of nymphs and mortals. However these women tried to escape he always manged to catch them.

Many myths tell of Hera’s jealousy. She was a consistent enemy of Zeus’ mistresses and their children by him. For a time, a nymph named Echo had the job of distracting Hera from his affairs by incessantly talking: when Hera discovered the deception, she cursed Echo to repeat the words of others.
