The Key Phrase for Sagittarius is “I seek” and it governs the number 9
Sagittarius 23 November – 21 December (approx)
Sagittarius is the optimist and teacher, the archer/centaur, half human half horse. Sagittarius corresponds to the thighs in the body where the most powerful muscles are, Sag has to be on the move and to travel long distances.
They are keen on sport, and love horses. This is no surprise as their symbol is the centaur, half human, half horse. They seek the truth and are the like the archer who shoots his arrows – his piercing intellect- up into the sky, the higher realms.
This is the ninth sign of the zodiac when the nights are long. In Native American traditions it’s the time of year to sit around the fire and tell stories. You are the story teller and adventurer of the zodiac. Sagittarians are the visionaries who live in the future.
Planetary Ruler and Qualities
Sagittarius is a mutable fire sign. As the last fire sign it takes the creative flame and shares it with others, so Sagittarius makes an excellent teacher. Ruled by Jupiter, the giant of all the planets, Sagittarius is a big picture sign. Jupiter is Zeus, king of the gods who rules the skies. The stories of his sexual conquests are legendary, however his main concern is to father a race, which is why Jupiter is exalted in Cancer, the sign of family.
Jupiter is also a Santa Claus archetype, jovial, generous and on the large size. He was also known as the thunder god and is all powerful, usually in a good way. Jupiter shows us what we have faith in, and our personal religion.
Sagittarius is the life and soul of the party and a hearty companion. They love to socialise but also want freedom, and don’t like being pinned down. The other fire signs are great, Leo being the perfect match as long as they are heading in the same direction. Air signs can be explosive, water signs give affection but are way too sensitive to Sagittarians brashness. There is most affinity with the other sign ruled by Jupiter – Pisces – as you share the same philosophical outlook on life. The earth signs Taurus and Capricorn are best in a business relationship as long as Sag’s fire is allowed to burn brightly.
Constellation and Myth
Sag is the most stunning constellation of the centaur Chiron who was a wise healer and tutor to many Greek heroes. One day he was accidentally wounded in his thigh by one of Hercules arrows which was dipped in the poisonous blood of the Hydra. Because he was half immortal he couldn’t die and also couldn’t heal himself. After suffering a long time he eventually swapped places with Prometheus who had stolen fire to give to mankind and was being tortured by the gods as punishment. Chiron renounced his immortality and willingly went to his death. In acknowledgement of his sacrifice and past service the gods rewarded him by placing him in the heavens as a constellation.
Strengths and weaknesses
Sagittarians are the missionaries, the explorers and lawyers. Their enthusiasm and optimism is unchallenged. They have huge faith and confidence in their abilities. However they can be unstable and over enthusiastic and can drop plans before completion. Their have no malice and are direct and forthright in expressing their ideas. Their desire to influence others and tell them where they are going wrong can come across as opinionated and self righteousness. They are natural story tellers and love to talk, but ignore subtle hints when to stop! They make excellent lawyers as they love the truth.
